How This Calculator Works
This calculator uses the veterinary-standard Resting Energy Requirement (RER) formula:
RER = 70 × (body weight in kg)0.75
The RER is then multiplied by a factor based on your dog's life stage, activity level, and neutering status to determine their Maintenance Energy Requirement (MER) — the total daily calories they need.
Activity Level Multipliers
| Factor | Multiplier |
|---|---|
| Neutered adult, low activity | 1.2 - 1.4 |
| Intact adult, moderate activity | 1.6 - 1.8 |
| Active/working dog | 2.0 - 5.0 |
| Puppy (4-12 months) | 2.0 |
| Senior dog | 1.0 - 1.2 |
Tips for Accurate Feeding
- Use a measuring cup or kitchen scale for consistency
- Split daily amount into 2 meals for adults, 3 for puppies
- Monitor your dog's weight every 2-4 weeks and adjust accordingly
- Treats should make up no more than 10% of daily calories
