Large Breed vs Small Breed
Large and giant breed puppies need controlled growth to prevent joint problems. They should gain weight more slowly than small breeds and may need puppy food formulated for large breeds (lower calcium, controlled calories).
Small breed puppies mature faster (reaching adult size by 9-10 months) and have higher metabolic rates per pound of body weight.
When to Switch to Adult Food
- Toy/Small breeds: 9-12 months
- Medium breeds: 12 months
- Large breeds: 12-18 months
- Giant breeds: 18-24 months
