Body Condition Assessment
Understanding Body Condition Score (BCS)
Veterinarians use a 1-9 scale Body Condition Score to assess pet weight:
| BCS | Category | Signs |
|---|---|---|
| 1-3 | Underweight | Ribs, spine, hip bones easily visible; no fat cover |
| 4-5 | Ideal | Ribs easily felt; visible waist from above; abdominal tuck from side |
| 6-7 | Overweight | Ribs felt with pressure; waist barely visible; slight belly |
| 8-9 | Obese | Ribs not felt; no waist; distended abdomen; fat deposits |
Why Weight Matters
- Overweight pets have 2.5 years shorter lifespan on average
- Excess weight increases risk of diabetes, arthritis, and heart disease
- Even 10-15% above ideal weight is clinically significant
What To Do
- Underweight: Increase food by 10-20% and consult your vet to rule out health issues
- Ideal: Maintain current feeding — you're doing great!
- Overweight: Reduce food by 10-15%, increase exercise gradually
- Obese: Consult your vet for a weight loss plan — never crash-diet a pet
