General Water Guidelines
The standard recommendation is:
- Dogs: 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight per day (approximately 50-60 ml/kg)
- Cats: 3.5-4.5 ounces per 5 pounds of body weight (approximately 44-66 ml/kg)
Factors That Increase Water Needs
- Dry food diet (only 10% moisture vs 75%+ in wet food)
- Hot weather or heated indoor environments
- High activity levels (exercise, play)
- Nursing mothers (up to 2-3× normal intake)
- Certain medications (diuretics, steroids)
Signs of Dehydration
- Dry, sticky gums
- Loss of skin elasticity (skin tent test)
- Sunken eyes
- Lethargy
- Reduced urination
